Job Description
Overview

VTG is seeking a Welder to support work at Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCP) in Philadelphia, PA. The Millwright will support a test site to support Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) system research, development, testing, prototype evaluation, and in-service engineering support. Specifically, supporting a program to provide industrial services for test sites, equipment removal/relocation services, and maintenance services for various systems and equipment for the DDG-51, FFG-62 and DDG(X) Land Base Engineering Sites.


What will you do?

  • Welds metal parts together using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes.
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes layout on metals.
  • Performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of metal parts.
  • Positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
  • Utilizes hand tools such as grinders, drills, needle guns, saws, calipers, scribes, combination squares.
  • Verifies conformance of fabricated layouts and items to the blueprint specifications.
  • Operate all machines in discipline.

Do you have what it takes?

Education/Experience:

  • Five years of welding experience at the journeyman level of competence with the ability to apply and interpret blueprints and welding symbols to properly join metals in accordance with specified procedures and techniques. Of the five years of experience, a minimum of two years shall include knowledge of welding standards and how metals and alloys, such as different kinds of steel, high strength alloy steels, aluminum, cast iron, nickel, monel, metal brass, copper, bronze, magnesium, beryllium and titanium react to different welding processes and techniques. Capability to weld metal parts and structures that vary in size, shape and thickness from light gauge metals to heavy plate requiring multiple passes and to welding passes and to weld dissimilar metals, such as copper to steel. Skill to make complete penetration and fusion welds and ability to use MIG and TIG methods.
  • Apprenticeship or certification in welding from trade or industrial school.
