Job Description Summary:The Office of Development seeks an experienced and highly motivated Director of Development for the National Academy of Medicine, who will be responsible for researching, systematically identifying, managing and fostering relationships with prospective and current sponsors and donors - including foundations, think tanks, major corporate and high net worth individuals - with an interest in funding scientific or policy-related work in the fields of public health, health care, biomedical science, and health equity. The Director of Development, NAM, will work under the direction of the NAM President and collaborate closely with NAM Executive and Program leadership to develop fundraising strategies and campaigns in alignment with the mission and programs of the NAM. The position will focus on identifying and cultivating philanthropists who want to engage and invest in efforts to advance population health and health equity that are of the highest quality, rigor, and independence. As such, the ideal candidate will possess knowledge of the public health and health care landscapes, as the position will be expected to liaise between NAM executives and program staff and potential donors. Importantly, the position should identify and steward major giving prospects, including supporting the development of funding proposals.

The Director of Development, NAM, will report to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), work under the direction of the NAM President, and collaborate closely with other senior colleagues in the Academies' development office in planning and coordinating events, stewardship, annual giving, institutional giving, planned giving and operations. More generally, the Director will participate in building a culture of philanthropy across the organization and a high-performance team. The successful candidate will have a passion for the NAM's mission and a commitment to advancing health equity; is a proactive, forward-looking leader and thinker, who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions; exercises good judgment in a variety of complex situations, with strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills; effectively balances multiple, often competing, priorities and assignments; and enjoys working in a dynamic environment that is results- and mission-driven.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • At the direction of the NAM President, in conjunction with the CDO, identifies, plans, and implements fundraising strategies for the NAM in alignment with the NAM's mission and priorities.

  • Responsible for systematically researching and identifying foundations, think tanks, major corporate and high net worth individuals, whose interests are aligned with those of NAM programs, as potential sponsors and donors.

  • Oversees all corporate and foundation-related development activities for the NAM. Maintains ongoing stewardship with current donors by identifying areas of mutual interest and developing relationships that meet NAM fundraising goals. Promotes existing and planned program work to both existing and prospective funders. Meets regularly with philanthropy contacts at foundations and corporations to keep them aware of developments at NAM and garner interest.

  • Develops and writes grant proposals to corporate and foundation partners. Works with NAM Executive and Program leadership and staff to identify potential funders for their projects and activities, including working with program staff to develop their case for support, emails/letters of inquiry and other correspondence.

  • Manages and supports the growth of a portfolio of major individual donors (capable of gifts over $100K per year), maintaining existing donor relationships and fostering relationships with new donor prospects.

  • Reports on projects at ongoing Development Office and Academy meetings.

  • Participates in strategic planning efforts. Identifies funding sources and opportunities. Develops strategies to cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects.

  • Prepares annual fundraising plans including key performance indicators, revenue targets and expense forecasts following direction from the NAM President, in conjunction with the Chief Development Officer, and contributes to the establishment of methods for measuring performance across the Development Office.

  • Actively participates in building a culture of teamwork, collaboration, creativity and high performance with employees of the Academies, volunteers, donors, and members of the Academies.

  • Monitors and reports on effectiveness of fundraising activities and strategies. Recommends and implements new ideas and opportunities for fundraising growth.

  • Represents the Development Office in conferences, seminars and other public and private events to advance the goals of the organization.

  • Provides leadership and mentors employees. Trains and develops employees to successfully perform current responsibilities and encourages development of staff for future roles. Forms effective teams and cultivates a work environment that fosters teamwork. Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies. Initiates personnel actions, including performance and compensation reviews and disciplinary actions.

  • Remains current and fully informed of laws, techniques, and advancements in the fundraising profession.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Appreciation of the importance of sciences, engineering and medicine and the mission of the Academies. Thorough understanding of philanthropy and trends in the profession. Knowledge and understanding of sophisticated fundraising practices including corporate giving, annual giving and planned giving techniques. Ability to conceptualize, plan, and implement a programmatic approach to building relationships and securing philanthropic support including setting ambitious goals, developing strategies for prospects, prioritizing activities, asking for gifts, and orchestrating the involvement of volunteers and organization leadership. Ability to solve problems of substantial variety and complexity. Ability to undertake tasks broad in nature, requiring ingenuity, and originality. Ability to serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues. Ability to operate independently, and exercise significant latitude for independent judgment, discretion, and action. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to train and develop staff. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other departments through effective communication. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in related field, or equivalent knowledge.

Minimum Experience: Eight years of related professional experience; two of which were in a supervisory capacity.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to the Chief Development Officer. General direction is provided. Supervises assigned staff.

Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $97,240 - $151,935. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range.

Work Environment: Hybrid office environment with frequent travel between National Academies' facilities and off-site locations.
