I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:
At The George Washington University, the rank of University Professor is the highest "Regular Active Status" faculty position codified by the Faculty Code at the University. Only a very few members of the George Washington University faculties ever achieve this position. It is reserved for a select few individuals who have attained the accomplishments and associated stature to be so recognized. These individuals rely on a team to support their research efforts and amazing work. Reporting to the University Professor of Medical Humanities and Professor of Health Policy and American Studies, the Research Associate will contribute to such work.

The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Research
  • Independently conducts research with minimal supervision to advance the research agenda of the University Professor of Medical Humanities in the areas of African American medical history, history of medicine and public health, bioethics, and health equity.
  • Consults with the University Professor about larger research goals, methodologies, and sources and monitors research schedules and deadlines.
  • Conducts research in libraries, online databases, digital resources, and archives and writes reports detailing analyses and findings.
  • Communicates with colleagues in archives and libraries regarding research questions.
  • Reviews, revises, and edits talks, presentations, and manuscripts written by the University Professor.
  • Assists in the development of oral presentations, including preparation of slides.
  • Contributes to the dissemination and translation of the University Professor's research through oral and written communications.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with scholars and staff at universities, research institutes, libraries, and archives.
  • Represents the University Professor at professional meetings and conferences.
  • Assists in writing grants and managing grant and research project budgets.
  • Organizes and maintains hard-copy and digital research files.

Administrative
  • Coordinates events, talks, and special activities for the University Professor with external constituents.
  • Arranges the University Professor's travel for research trips, conferences, and speaking engagements.
  • Manages the University Professor's calendar.
  • Orders supplies, manages office research budget, and submits reimbursements.
  • Supervises and assists in the hiring of undergraduate research assistants.

The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC and may require travel throughout/outside of the metropolitan area of the Washington, D.C. to conduct additional research.

The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a master's degree and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MA degree in history or a related humanities field is preferred.
  • One to three years research experience in the humanities is preferred.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Resourceful, strategic, and creative thinker with expert research skills and sound analytical abilities.
  • Self-directed, organized, professional, strong interpersonal skills and good judgment.
  • Experience managing social media platforms and web development desired.
  • Strong editorial and communication background preferred.
  • Experience supervising junior staff or interns.
Typical Hiring Range $53,853.78 - $75,348.30
