Job Description
Communications Senior Editor, McKinsey Global Institute
Who You'll Work With
As part of the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), the business and economics research arm of McKinsey & Company, you will be part of a small global editorial team. You will work closely with MGI partners (many of whom are economists) and rotational research teams made up of McKinsey consultants. You will help them turn quantitative research findings on business, economic, demographic, and technology trends into compelling, multimedia thought leadership content, including reports, op-eds, and social media posts.
As needed, you will collaborate with other McKinsey research institutes - Institute for Black Economic Mobility (BEM) and McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) - to develop articles and reports highlighting their insights.
There is flexibility to hire at Editor or Senior Editor level, depending on the candidate's experience.
What You'll Do
Much of your job will involve drafting and editing long-form research reports for MGI and for the firm's other research institutes. You will manage each project through outlining, drafting, revising, approvals, production, and launch, while meeting tight deadlines. This involves working with research teams to build storylines, sharpen messages, and turn quantitative analysis into crisp, digestible writing. You may also be managing other editors as part of their and your career development.
One of your key tasks will be incorporating and balancing ideas and feedback from multiple contributors. You will ensure the quality and accuracy of our research while capturing the right tone and voice as well as adhering to quality, risk, and style guidelines. You will need to be a quick study, capable of absorbing new topics, synthesizing information, and capturing MGI's voice. You will also produce shorter articles for McKinsey outlets and external publications.
Part of your job will be ensuring that charts, visuals, and presentations are clear, accurate, and engaging. While you will not produce graphics, you will need to have a keen visual sense and the ability to make suggestions and come up with concepts. You will collaborate with MGI's digital editor to create social media assets, video scripts and other multimedia content. You will also work with our external communications teams to produce press and outreach materials.
You will engage and inspire colleagues through your thought-partnership and leadership skills to advance MGI's publishing objectives. You will be expected to clearly communicate with internal and external teams and relevant McKinsey leadership in support of an increasing volume of editorial projects. You may be asked to support junior editors as part of their and your career development. You are able to independently manage freelance/agency resources related to your own projects.
Please submit a resume, cover letter, and three writing samples (only business- or economics-related articles, please). Your cover letter should include a succinct (~200 words or fewer) answer to the following question: What do you like about MGI content, and what areas do you think could improve and why? Please be candid and specific.
