Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

Aireon is seeking a Data Engineer to join our Integrated Product Team (IPT) in Engineering. As a Data Engineer, you will design, create, and maintain data pipelines in public and government cloud environments following guidelines developed in collaboration with Solutions Architect and DevOps Teams. You will assist Service Desk and DevOps teams in investigating production incidents to resolution using the standard Aireon incident management processes.

What You'll Do

    Work with Data Analysts/Scientists, Solution Architects, and DevOps Engineers to develop data pipelines and analytics products.
  • Define and implement data lifecycle and management best practices and tools to power existing and new products and features.
  • Responsible for developing complex queries in SQL and stored procedures from large data volume and multiple sources.
  • Assemble complex sets of data that meet research and product requirements.
  • Identify bottlenecks in the data provision and distribution, proposing solutions and alternative technologies to enhance product success and customer satisfaction.
  • Use a flexible, analytical approach to design, develop, and evaluate models and advanced algorithms leading to optimal data extraction.

Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree in computer science or a related field with five or more years of professional experience.
    • Bachelors degree with eight years or more experience.
  • Strong technical background in Databricks and related technologies.
  • Proficiency in Python and Spark, as well as familiarity with the Databricks platform.
  • Experience managing relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) non-relational databases (e.g., MongoDB), graph databases (e.g., Node4j), and vector databases.
  • Experience in building pipelines to support Machine Learning model training and serving.
  • Experience in both batch and real-time (high velocity) data processing.
  • Comfort with agile delivery methodologies in a fast-paced complex environment.
  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills in a dynamic environment.
  • Eligible to obtain an SF-85p Public Trust Clearance.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with Microsoft Azure cloud services.
  • Hands-on experience in continuous delivery and continuous integration.
  • Optimize and tune system performance to ensure high throughput and low latency.
  • Manage and optimize data infrastructure, including data lakes, data lakehouses, data warehouses, and data pipeline processes.
  • Knowledge of geospatial libraries, tools, and geospatial data visualization is an added advantage.
  • Hands-on experience of working with Big Data / Analytics technologies.
  • Have experience working with real-time or near-real-time ingestion.
  • Have strong programming knowledge in Python or Scala.

1-3-6-12 Month Plan

In the first month we'll expect you to...

  • Get onboarded and train with your manager.
  • Get acclimated into the role.
  • Understand the tools and different stakeholders.
  • Be proactive in learning what Aireon does.
  • Understand the role of IPT at Aireon and learn about IPT members roles and responsibilities.

At 3 months we'll expect you to...

  • Participate in requirements and architecture decisions of new features and products.
  • Collaborate with multiple functional teams to coordinate changes to data pipelines.
  • Design and build new ELT-based data models.
  • Set up entire data environments: loading data, transforming, extracting.
  • Participate in task breakdowns and level-of-effort analysis.
  • Execute tasking within an Agile development process.

At 6 months we'll expect you to...

  • Build required infrastructure for optimal data extraction, transformation, and loading from various sources using cloud technologies.
  • Integrate analytical tools to utilize the data pipeline, solving research problems the stakeholders and data science team pose.
  • Contribute to major system upgrades, deployment automation, monitoring enhancements, and production changes.
  • Create operational playbooks, contribute to how-to articles, and gain domain knowledge to drive changes in the team.

At 12 months we'll expect you to...

  • Keep current with emerging technologies and trends by attending conferences and workshops relevant to department and project goals.
  • Maintain appropriate standardized guidelines and processes to expedite workflow and ultimately improve efficiencies.
  • Collaborate with other technical leaders to align data engineering efforts with overall technology and business strategies.
  • Organize data and metrics for measurable and trackable confidence in data quality and reporting to fulfill agreed-upon quality standards.

About the Team

  • The Integrated Product Team comprises product development and product engineering.
  • IPT is responsible for developing and operating secure and reliable products for our customers.
  • You will play a critical role in the product development team.
  • Our team is tasked with converting customer needs and business goals into product and sprint backlogs, crafting a resilient architecture to uphold the product objectives, formulating technical roadmaps and enhancing the effectiveness of both personnel and procedures.
  • We leverage collaboration tools to connect remotely with team members and stakeholders.
  • We use Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology for continuous improvement and problem-solving within an agile framework to improve process and outcomes.
  • We follow the Scrum methodology and work on a 3-weeks sprint basis.
  • Our team members are in the Washington DC area, with external consultants here local as well as in Canada.
