Job Description

Temporary Summer position open for Lab Safety Instructors to administer and teach a course on laboratory safety practices and principles to summer interns working at biological research laboratories at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD). Course instruction and related duties are needed up to 8 hours/day, 3 days/week, from mid-May until July 31, 2024.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Biosafety, Biology, or related field
  • Practical experience in teaching/training
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles, with emphasis on occupational health and safety and biological safety
  • Practical experience working within a biomedical or other research laboratory is a plus

Duties/Requirements

  • Provide interactive instruction using already developed course materials in a small group format (courses held 2 or 3 days per week, mid-May - late July 2024).
  • Perform a dry run of class prior to the first training/class day.
  • Collect and score student tests at the end of each 1.5 hour class; record scores.
  • Remain on-site to answer questions and

conduct one-on-one training, as necessary (for students who do not pass the exam), to ensure each student achieves a passing test score.

  • Administer a course evaluation following each class.
  • Complete an instructor course evaluation following each class.
  • Assist with administrative support requirements of the course, such as on-going inventory tracking of supplies and class materials, inventory and packing of materials at the conclusion of the class season.
  • Ensure that the classroom and mock laboratory are ready and all equipment such as computers are fully operational prior to each class; prepare and set up training materials.
  • Review course evaluations to gain knowledge of student feedback and improve teaching skills.
  • Deliver tests and evaluations to the Training Manager or assistant for processing, daily.
  • Provide a course attendance roster to the Training Manager or assistant at the conclusion of each day of classes.
