The Business Development Manager is responsible for assisting in the planning, coordination, and advancement of our most critical client-centric business development strategies.

Working collaboratively with all levels of staff and lawyers firmwide across practices and departments, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for developing and executing on business development consistent with the firm's strategies for our Tax practice and Inflation Reduction Act strategic initiative.

The ideal candidate will be a key strategist and facilitator of practice generation and business growth. The team is responsible for understanding the competitive landscape, building and maintaining client relationships, conducting research, and developing strategies to expand the firm's client base and revenue. With a focus on strategic investment, astute budget management, and data-driven insights, the Business Developer contributes significantly to the firm's success by ensuring it remains competitive and adaptable in the dynamic legal industry while facilitating and delivering exceptional client service.

This position will reside in the Philadelphia or Washington DC office and offers a flexible hybrid working arrangement.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead practice generation-focused programs and activities.

  • Identify business development action items, drive follow up and execution.

  • Identify specific clients to target for increased revenue generation and develop a plan regarding how to accomplish same.

  • Identify cross-collaboration opportunities for clients to expand work across new practice areas and geographies; work with RAs to develop plan regarding same.

  • Collaborate with lawyers and BD team members to prepare compelling pitches and proposals and track activity.

  • Prepare and report on data analysis as-needed (e.g., top clients, client work by practice, client work by segment, RA/AIC lists, matter descriptions/narratives, etc.).

  • Collaborate with the marketing team to create and execute marketing campaigns, including digital marketing, content creation, and social media engagement.

  • Collaborate with the marketing team to plan and coordinate firm-sponsored events, seminars, and webinars to showcase legal expertise.

  • Attend industry conferences, networking events, and trade shows to build relationships and promote the firm.

  • Prepares annual partner meeting sessions.

  • Drives working groups, initiatives, and special projects.

  • Prepares quarterly reports on key metrics, strategic priorities, and relevant trends and developments for leadership and firm management.

  • Develop and manage the business development budget, allocating resources effectively to maximize ROI.

Experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and seven years of progressively responsible experience in business and practice development, marketing, communications, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of experience and education will be considered.

  • Law firm or professional services experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of the competitive landscape challenging major global law firms is a significant benefit.

  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and implement strategic business development plans.

  • Experience excelling in a highly matrixed work environment with ability to work across multiple business units and functional teams.

  • Superior client service orientation.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with partners, lawyers, executives, and all levels of employees across the firm in addition to clients and vendors effectively.

  • Professional, open-minded approach to working effectively with differing opinions and diverse personalities.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and effective presentation skills.

  • Results oriented with time management and organizational skills to prioritize work and handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Ability to work independently as well as manage projects and assignments in a collaborative team environment.

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills and ability to manage and motivate staff.

  • Discretion with confidential information.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, familiarity using a CRM system, and ability to adapt to new software programs.

  • Flexibility with working hours and business travel.
