Overview of the Role

The Atlantic Council seeks a talented and team-oriented individual for a self-starting position as a Project Assistant in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. The Project Assistant will play a vital role in providing administrative, research, and logistical support to the Scowcroft Center's management team.

The successful candidate will have a passion for the work of the Scowcroft Center with general knowledge of key substantive priorities, including advancing US leadership, navigating strategic competition, and working alongside transatlantic and transpacific allies and partners. Demonstrated proficiency in writing, verbal communication, and administration are highly desired. Finalists for this position will demonstrate resourcefulness, a solution-oriented mindset, and the ability to prioritize and multitask effectively while adhering to deadlines.

The position is based in Washington, DC, with an expectation of working 3+ days/week in the office, though occasional remote work is permissible. This contract is for an initial 6-month period with the possibility of extension up to 12 months and/or conversion into a salaried entry-level staff position. The Scowcroft Center prides itself on offering opportunities for professional growth to those who demonstrate a commitment to their work and enjoy learning in a fluid environment, and, while not guaranteed, the individual who excels in this role would be considered for transitioning to a more substantive role after a year in the position. Pay is commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers starting at $24.04 per hour.

Job responsibilities
  • Administrative Support. Provide administrative support for the Scowcroft Center's VP and senior director, such as scheduling internal and external meetings; managing travel logistics; helping with expense reports; and helping to draft a weekly update of the center's work for the CEO, Executive Vice President, and other senior staff at the Council. Other tasks include monitoring the senior director's inbox for time-sensitive communications; helping the senior director prioritize review of draft publications, emails, and proposals; and taking notes at a weekly cross-Council coordination call on Ukraine-related programming. On occasion, this role may call for providing travel logistics support for business-related matters to key stakeholders in the Scowcroft Center's work (e.g., members of the center's Advisory Council).
  • Research Support. Provide research support for the Scowcroft Center's VP and senior director, including for media hits and op-eds. Help to ensure the senior director is substantively prepared for meetings and events. As needed, support the Scowcroft Center's content development through occasional proofreading of external publications such as op-eds and research reports.
  • External Communications. Support the center's deputy director of operations in keeping the Scowcroft Center's webpage up-to-date and helping with quality control for the center's social media presence. Assist the deputy director of operations in preparing the center's weekly newsletter, The Strategist, which provides a summary of the center's latest work.
  • Event Support. Support the senior director and deputy director of operations in planning biannual Scowcroft Center Advisory Council meetings, including help with invitations, event set-up, and notetaking. On occasion, this role may call for providing support on event logistics in the event one of the center's initiatives is understaffed or otherwise needs assistance during a busy period. This support could include helping to coordinate the execution of onsite, offsite, and virtual events, including coordinating VIP arrivals and departures, venue setup, guest management, invitation drafting, and speaker prep.
