Job Description

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Technologist. The Research Technologist will be working in a molecular virology (HIV-1, biosafety level 2) laboratory and will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with molecular biology and primary cell culture which requires a high level of rigor and reproducibility. The projects require care in data collection, preparation of reports and interfacing with sponsors. . .


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Mouse breeding and husbandry.
  • Handle and perform blood draw and injections on mice infected with viral pathogens.
  • Isolation of peripheral blood lymphocytes and monocytes from human blood.
  • Perform in vitro infection studies with HIV-1.
  • Perform general molecular biology techniques such as cloning, qPCR, and Western blotting.
  • Perform specialized techniques including multicomponent single-cell labeling, confocal and high-content microscopy, and multi-color flow cytometry.
  • Will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis


Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Works effectively as a team-member and exhibits excellent interpersonal, organizational, and self-management skills
  • Capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and interpreting results.
  • Isolation of PBMCs and culture of primary human cells; sterile technique.
  • Must be willing to work under Biohazard Level 2 Safety conditions with HIV-1.
  • Must display willingness to learn and implement new technologies.
  • Occasional irregular work hours consistent with research needs related to the in vivo studies with mice is required.
  • Ability for self-management, integrity and professionalism.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.





Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Experience and or interest in conducting single-cell bioinformatics is desirable.
  • Experience and or interest in in vivo studies with mice.

Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 - Max $26.00 HRLY ($43,160 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
