The mission of the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies is to advance a sound and nuanced understanding of Muslim societies and the Islamic faith, its role in world history, and its current patterns of globalization. The Center recognizes that Islam is a universal faith and a world civilization with a global community. Thus, the Center provides a global, rather than regional, framework for exploring Islam.

The AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies supports research, interdisciplinary academic programs, and community outreach. By providing educational and research opportunities for students, faculty, and visiting scholars, it is helping develop 21st century leaders with a sophisticated understanding of the complex dynamics that shape Muslim communities worldwide.

About the Position:

The AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies seeks to hire a Graduate Editorial Associate to join the dynamic team of Maydan (), ACGIS's online publishing platform. We are seeking an editorial team member who is responsible and attentive to details.

Days/Times: Available during the Center's hours, Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm; specific schedule will be decided around the student's schedule of classes.

Duration: Initial appointment is for 1 year; renewable based on availability of funding and job performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Curating content for Maydan's articles and book review pipeline;
  • Curating Maydan's ongoing Journal Roundups and Book Display resource pages;
  • Curating additional information on Summer Language Programs and Graduate Programs databases;
  • Provide research and editing support to the Maydan Podcast project, and help develop Maydan's social media footprint and academic networks; and
  • Additional duties including assistance with ACGIS events or supporting other Center activities may be assigned as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Internet research, database management, editing and writing skills;
  • Organizational skills, strong work ethic and team player; and
  • Interest in the mission of the Center's work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate work in fields related to Islamic/Middle Eastern Studies;
  • Experience in graphic design and audio editing; and
  • Familiarity with GMU and its programs.
