Job Description

JMT Technology Group, a progressive geospatial and information technology services and solutions provider, has an opening for a GIS Analyst for a client in Newport News, Virginia. The successful candidate will be responsible for project support of maps and geographic information systems and data analysis and will be working in-person at the client site in Newport News, Virginia. Sponsorship not available for this position.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Performs data research, import, management, investigation, and verification
  • Designs and maintains geodatabases
  • Uses Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tools for data migration
  • Develops, documents, and implements quality assurance and quality control procedures
  • Evaluates new software and tools
  • Automates repetitive geoprocessing tasks
  • Creates and publishes feature services and map services
  • Manages versioned geodatabases
  • Assists project and task managers in formulating and implementing project plans and managing task-based work and regularly communicates task progress to the Project Manager
  • Works directly with customers to identify and document requirements; determines how GIS technology can help meet customer needs and formulates and implements cost-effective GIS-based solutions
  • Utilizes GIS technology to perform complex and advanced spatial analysis and distills results into formats that are easy to comprehend
  • Researches, develops, and offers innovative approaches to problem-solving
  • Tests and analyzes custom applications or tools and coordinates with developers to address bugs and enhancements
  • Assists with application deployment and testing at the client site
  • Assists in developing training materials and manuals
  • Provides instruction to internal staff and clients
  • Supports field data collection using GPS and other mobile data collection tools
  • Supports GIS data creation, conversion and manipulation as needed
  • Performs field verification to confirm accuracy of data in the geospatial database


Required Skills
  • Knowledge of GIS concepts and analytical techniques, including geospatial data creation, conversion, manipulation, and analysis
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, and make sound, independent decisions within established guidelines
  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute GIS-related tasks efficiently and effectively while meeting customer requirements
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of geodatabase administration principles and demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise geodatabases
  • Ability to communicate and work collaboratively and effectively with project team members and customers and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and Visio
  • All candidates will be required to complete a client background investigation which will include criminal and DMV checks


Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in geography, GIS, computer science, information technology, engineering, planning, or related field
  • Minimum of three years of experience in the application of GIS technology to solve clients' needs
  • Minimum of three years of experience utilizing Esri's latest suite of technology, including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and Portal for ArcGIS
  • Minimum of two years of experience delegating tasks and reviewing other team members' work and working independently on complex tasks
  • Experience using GPS technologies (i.e. Trimble and Leica) or mobile data collection tools

Preferred Experience

  • Experience using AutoDesk or Microstation products
  • Experience performing data translation (GIS to CAD and vice versa)
  • Experience with ModelBuilder and Python scripting
  • Experience working with ArcGIS Online
  • Experience working with the Esri field operations suite, including ArcGIS Collector, ArcGIS Survey123, and ArcGIS QuickCapture
  • Experience creating and publishing map services
  • Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Work will be in an office environment 90-95% of the time, with occasional field investigation (less than 10%).
