PAY BAND: 3 ($51,000 - $56,000)

POSITION SUMMARY

NSLI-Y is part of a U.S. government initiative to foster international cooperation by ensuring that Americans have the linguistic skills and cultural knowledge necessary to effectively communicate. NSLI-Y is a program of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. NSLI-Y provides merit-based scholarships for eligible U.S. high school students to learn less commonly taught languages. Based in Washington, D.C., the Program Coordinator position will primarily support participants and the implementation of the Virtual NSLI-Y program, assist in coordinating NSLI-Y alumni and re-entry activities, and support daily operations of the NSLI-Y administration department. The NSLI-Y Program Coordinator will report to the NSLI-Y Senior Program Officer.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports the administration and implementation of NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y;
  • Assists in outreach, student recruitment, and participant selection activities for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y;
  • Acts as a student advisor to Virtual NSLI-Y participants, including responding to participant inquiries or support needs, tracking required materials, assisting with technology support, facilitating community building activities and orientations, and ultimately, supporting participant retention and success;
  • Contributes to monitoring and evaluation activities for Virtual NSLI-Y;
  • Assists in coordination of activities, programs, and special events for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y alumni;
  • Responds to inquiries from Virtual NSLI-Y and NSLI-Y applicants, participants, and alumni by phone and email;
  • Coordinates logistics, finances, and payments for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y;
  • Assists in coordinating logistics and content for re-entry orientations and other alumni activities;
  • Assists in operation of program databases;
  • Communicates with Virtual NSLI-Y teachers/staff, NSLI-Y partner organizations, and federal funder;
  • Contributes to the creation of program highlights, reports, proposals, social media assets, and promotional materials; and
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in one of the target languages, international affairs, international education, education, or related field;
  • Professional experience (minimum of 2 years) in education, international education, study abroad, or virtual/cultural exchange;
  • Demonstrated success and professional experience in student advising, building strong rapport with students, and/or supporting students (high school aged preferred) from a variety of backgrounds;
  • Commitment to inclusion, access, and equity;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to handle high volumes of communication effectively and professionally;
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team;
  • Ability to exercise problem-solving skills, good judgment, and discretion in handling sensitive information and participant issues;
  • Ability to approach challenges with flexibility, creativity, and a positive attitude;
  • Outstanding organizational and time-management skills;
  • Training and/or professional experience in virtual learning or virtual exchange programs preferred;
  • Professional experience in facilitating meaningful virtual events preferred;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, social media platforms, Canvas, and virtual platforms preferred; and
  • Experience with language study, language teaching, and/or second language acquisition is desirable.

WORK CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Essential functions are performed in a general office setting or remote work environment with low noise. Job demands may require long periods of sitting, telephone work and/or computer work, as well as interactions with other team members and external stakeholders and lifting up to 15 lbs. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSITION

This position may require occasional work outside of regular business hours for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y recruitment events, Virtual NSLI-Y community-building events, or other NSLI-Y events/trainings/participant needs.

The incumbent for this position must comply with American Councils' hybrid work requirements and must report to the Washington, DC office at least two days a week, potentially more if events or other needs require.
