General Responsibilities
The Division of Liberal Studies at Howard Community College is seeking applicants for a full-time position in the discipline of Early Childhood Development/Teacher Education. This is a full-time, 10-month position in which the faculty member will be expected to teach day, evening, and online courses in the area of Early Childhood Development and Teacher Education, as well as fulfill a variety of college responsibilities including learning outcomes assessment; curriculum and program development; adjunct hiring and supervision; and service on college committees and advisory boards. This position also manages and supervises the early childhood practicum required for the certificate and Associate of Applied Science degree.
Work Performed
  • Each faculty member is expected to teach 14 - 16 units per semester.
  • Faculty are required to teach in the modalities that are assigned to them based on student enrollment and departmental need.
  • Faculty are expected to maintain at least 5 office hours per week while class is in session.
  • Faculty are expected to demonstrate quality teaching by following best teaching practices as outlined in the faculty job description and as established by the Center for Learning Engagement at HCC.
  • Faculty are expected to participate in the development and implementation of plans to measure student learning. These measures will be focused on learning in the total educational program of a student and will include measures of value-added and comparisons with national and/or regional data. If deficiencies are found, faculty are expected to participate in program or course modifications designed to improve student learning in the areas of deficiency.
  • Faculty are expected to: attend and actively participate in meetings, keep informed, respond promptly to requests for information, participate in commencement ceremonies and other significant institutional events, work cooperatively, respectfully, and effectively with peers, support staff, and administrators, use appropriate communication channels, carry out other tasks vital to the institution. These activities normally take 60 hours yearly.
  • Faculty are expected to spend around 80 hours yearly on activities related to major college responsibilities as outlined in the faculty job description.

Other Knowledge Required
  • Master's degree or higher in Child Development or Early Childhood Education
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience in a licensed childcare or Pre K-3rd grade setting and/or at the college level - community college preferred
  • Demonstrated record of college teaching excellence
  • Ability to teach using a variety of approaches including face to face, online, and hybrid
  • Ability to collect and analyze data on student learning
  • Familiarity with learning management software, i.e. Canvas, Blackboard, etc.
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to mentor adjunct faculty
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including e-mail and calendar
Working Conditions
Faculty are required to teach at the times and in the modalities that are assigned to them based on student enrollment and departmental need. Faculty are expected to maintain an on campus presence including at least four in person office hours per week, and to be available to attend meetings as scheduled.
