Company Overview
The Priory in the USA was constituted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Sovereign Head of the Order, in 1996. The first USA organization began in 1957, and was called the American Society of the Order of St John.

The head of the Priory in the USA is the Prior. He or she is appointed by the Grand Prior, worldwide head of the Order of St John, in London. The USA Prior, together with the Great Officers of the Order, and Priors of the other Priories, form The Grand Council.
The American Priory is governed by a Priory Chapter, each member of which is elected to a three-year term. Executive Officers, who meet regularly, are chosen triennially by the Prior and approved by the Priory Chapter, which meets four times annually. An Annual Report (see the Status as a Charity section) is distributed to members when the yearly audit is completed, and an Annual Meeting is held.

The Executive Director of the Priory in the USA handles day-to-day operations, focusing on membership communications and fundraising within and outside the Order.

Helping to Create a Brighter Future in the Holy Land

In honoring the vow they take upon joining the Order, Members of the Priory in the USA have raised millions of dollars over the years to support the work of St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital, its hospital in Hebron, satellite eye clinics in Gaza and the West Bank, and mobile outreach, training, teaching and research programs. The Priory also provides and organizes substantial donations of medical supplies and equipment, and recruits doctors and nurses to support the Hospital’s work.

The Priory encourages Members to fundraise in their local areas for much-needed cornea transplants and other operations.

Other Activities of the Priory in the USA

As one of 11 international Priories of the Order of St John, the Priory in the USA has hosted the international Annual Grand Council Meeting of the Order of St John twice. It also has supported the Grand Prior’s Appeal for The Priory of South Africa for its Home-Based Care Training Program, St. John programs in Sri Lanka and in Canada, and renovation projects for the Order’s Church crypt and museum in London. On a broader scale, members of the Priory in the USA responded to (among other disasters) the tsunami in Asia, Hurricane Katrina, and the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe by providing medical equipment, supplies and financial support to relief efforts.
