Job Description

Dewberry is currently seeking a full time Senior Landscape Architect/Planner to join our Land Planning & Landscape Architecture Department to work on a variety of projects for clients within the commercial, residential, industrial, and mixed-use private development sector. This opportunity is open in any of our Maryland offices (Lanham, Baltimore, Rockville, and Frederick) with the expectation of some travel to the other Dewberry offices.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, highly motivated, individual with a proven track record of design and construction expertise in the Washington DC Metro area that will join a team of outstanding professionals. The Project Manager (Sr. Landscape Architect/Planner) will lead a planning team in all aspects of project design to perform a variety of planning functions in support of a growing, multi-disciplinary group. The individual will be responsible for developing private and public capital improvement projects including site layout, Basic plans, Conceptual Site Plans, Preliminary Plans of Subdivision, Detailed Site Plans, Specific Design Plans. The Senior Landscape Architect/Planner must be flexible, technologically savvy, client-focused while working in a team environment and will need to execute and deliver tasks and services on time and on budget in the execution of projects from Concept to Construction.

Responsibilities

The work required by the Sr. Landscape Architect/Planner is diverse and ranges from land planning and presentations to clients to technical work that requires advanced knowledge in planning and design concepts exercising independent judgment. The ideal candidate will complement the current team by providing additional detailed landscape architecture and planning experience while providing project management depth.

    Must be experienced in technical design and theory for support of department manager and office manager in planning and design of complex projects.
  • Experienced individual must be capable of delivering projects that meet technical requirements on time and within budget both client and project deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to coordinate project submittals, facilitate regulatory agency approvals, and obtain construction permits. Senior staff is expected to manage design for multiple projects, assist department manager with marketing and proposal efforts and project management duties as well as oversee, train and mentor junior/mid-level staff by delegating tasks for project execution.
  • Candidates should have the ability to work closely with clients and agency staff, including attendance at public and/or construction meetings and represents the company at other events as needed.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Works in a timely fashion to meet project budgets.
  • Prepares or reviews graphics, exhibits and landscape architecture plans and computations.
  • Communicates effectively with clients, coworkers, sub consultants, and county/agency review staff both verbal and written.
  • Composes technical reports, memorandums and other verbal and written communication.
  • Assigns tasks and reviews work (QA/QC) by less experienced landscape architects/planners
  • Applies independent judgement on non-routine assignments, and provides feedback and guidance by applying advanced concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Works with staff and Department Manager; attends client and public meetings to address project inquiries answer questions, and provide updates on project approvals and permits.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Skills & Required Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture or Urban Planning by an accredited 3rd party (LAAB).
  • 10 years of progressive experience directly related to design and construction of land development projects in landscape architecture and/or urban design and planning.
  • Licensed Landscape Architecture Required.
  • Strong freehand illustration and rendering skills.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator,) Sketchup, ArcGIS/ArcView.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2019 and Microsoft office (word, excel, outlook, PowerPoint) is required.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a multifaceted team environment handling multiple projects and priorities.
  • Portfolio or work samples will be required if considered for an interview (writing sample, portfolio, grading example).
  • Strong motivation and interest to obtaining licensure or certification as a qualified professional.
  • Ability to exercise Independent judgement regarding advanced complex design and construction problems.
  • Highly motivated.

Preferred:

  • Licensed Landscape Architect in the State of Maryland or the ability to obtain Licensure within 1 year of employment.
  • Applicants with experience working in the design and construction of land development projects in Land Planning, Engineering, or Landscape Architecture in the Metro DC area. (MD, DC, NOVA).
  • Design and Construction experience working with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Prince Georges County/Montgomery County, Maryland State Highway Administration, Maryland Department of the Environment, Prince Georges County or similar jurisdictions.
